Game mechanics have optional degrees of automation (d100 rolling, XP awards, combat turns, etc.) depending on player and Game Master preference.

Powered by Chaosium's Basic Role-Playing System (BRP), QXR is 100% compatible with all BRP-based TTRPGs - Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, Pendragon, Open Quest, and many more, so you can play the same characters on a QXR or tabletop session.

Anyone can create new game enhancements (homebrew, for short) to the QuestXR platform. They can be kept private or only shared with a small group or submitted to all players and GM's on the platform. The creator of the homebrew will receive credit in the listing and QuestXR will give periodic awards to the best submissions. Players can like their favorite creations and a leaderboard will display the most prolific and popular homebrew on the platform.

GM's can use our web-based platform to craft new Quests for their regular players or make them available to the public for free or charge a fee per player or per party.

QuestXR supports both styles of adventures. Players can explore the Quest venue looking for ways to achieve their goals or they can be led through the narrative by tactically placed NPCs, clues, etc. Either way there is adventure to be had, loot to be found, and XP to be earned!

Quests are played on location in parks, museums, convention centers, city streets, music festivals, and even your home or backyard. Encounters, whether they are with NPCs, puzzles, hostiles, etc., are triggered by various means designed by the Quest Creator.

GM Avatar

We have integrated several GenAI tools for image, 3D model, and video creation, for your convenience, but use of them is not required.

GMs can train their personal AI avatars to be their presence in the Quests, acting according to their GM’ing style.

With just a few sentences of instruction, an NPC can be trained to naturally engage with players and impart necessary information via conversation rather than requiring specific keywords or phrases.

Characters

Your characters are your characters.

As with any TTRPG, you shape them the way you want.

Want to get started quickly? Choose from ready-to-play Archetypes – Warrior, Mage, Cleric, and Rogue – with pre-set skills and gear. All characteristic and skill points will be automatically distributed based on the Archetype. In seconds, you are good to go.

Love to agonize over every skill, point distribution, and piece of gear? Go for it. There are 10 steps in BRP character creation. Take a much time as you like to go through each one until you are happy with your characters’ builds.

Avatars

In QuestXR, you can visually represent your characters any way you want:

Select from a library of avatars with customization options
Draw them yourself
Use Midjourney, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc. to create the perfect look
Use our built-in GenAI image or 3D model generator
Import your ReadyPlayerMe or other Metaverse avatar
Craft your 3D avatar in Blender or Unity

Combat

Combat follows the BRP round-based rules, with slight modification for real time play.

Statements– Per one of the options in BRP, there are no statements in QuestXR. Since all players act simultaneously, there is no opportunity for them to change their mind based on the actions of their teammates.
Powers– Any instantaneous Power can be activated in the Powers phase.
Actions– Combatants (players and NPCs) take their turns based on DEX.
Resolution – Percentile dice are rolled determining success or failure.
Post-combat– Experience checks are performed.

Challenges– test players with puzzles, riddles, and mysteries to be solved.
Combat– no Quest would be complete without some conflict.
Encounters – non-combat interactions with NPCs, creatures, deities, etc.
Urgency– set time limits and countdowns or require two tasks to be performed simultaneously.

Real World

Quests take place in the real world – parks, museums, festivals, convention centers – any location you can imagine.

Simply identify locations for challenges, encounters, combat, etc. which will trigger when players enter the area.

Weave your stories around the location – imagine a National Treasure style storyline at the Smithsonian Institution or dinosaurs coming to life at a natural history museum.

Use video, audio, image, and text to advance the story, which can be delivered directly or in AR space (e.g., on a video monitor in a control room).

You can upload your own creations or select from a library of customizable assets.

For example, in the Mickey Lewis playable demo game, Mickey, a private investigator, find clues in some documents he receives when he is engaged to find Emily, a missing woman, receives a voicemail to begin the Quest, and can uncover ATM video footage of Emily.

QuestXR offers AI enhancement in several ways:

AI NPCs– with just a few sentences of instruction, an NPC can be trained to naturally engage with players and impart necessary information via conversation rather than requiring specific keywords or phrases.
GenAI– we have integrated several GenAI tools for image, 3D model, and video creation, for your convenience, but use of them is not required.
GM Avatar– since GMs won’t be able to oversee their Quests each time a player party runs them, they will be able to train their personal AI avatars to be their presence in the Quests, acting according to their GM’ing style.

House Rules

Not only does BRP support a wide range of optional rules, but also any good GM has their own set of “house rules” which they employ to fit their GM’ing style. GMs may fudge dice rolls, save characters from death, drop a hint, etc. all in the service of making the game more enjoyable or advancing the narrative.

GMs may employ various optional rules and/or rule adjustments when publishing their Quests on platform. We will be building this out over time, so we welcome GM contributions of optional game play enhancements.
